Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows is seeking women and youth applicants for their spring time scholarship awards. SITM has been awarding scholarships in our community for nearly 30 years and in that time has donated nearly $1 million to local youth and women continuing their education in pursuit of better opportunities.
The SITM Women’s Scholarship Awards are targeted at women who are returning to school to advance their careers and provide a better life for their families. Many scholarship recipients are single mothers or heads of household who are returning to community college, university, technical or trade school.
The scholarship awards are largely based on financial need and vary in size depending on the recipient’s educational goals and financial situation. Most scholarships are for more than one year, ensuring the winner has a steady stream of income to finish her schooling.
Women who have interrupted their academic studies and who now wish to continue or begin the pursuit of an undergraduate college degree can apply for the Nancy Gomes/Mary Gojack Memorial Scholarship. Awards range from $500 to $6,000. The scholarships are named for former SITM members Nancy Gomes and Mary Gojack. Nancy Gomes served for years in the Nevada Legislature advocating for women and children and was one of the first female trustees on the Washoe County School Board. Mary Gojack was a charter member of SITM, who worked at night while pursuing a degree in political science and later serving in the Nevada Legislature. She is the inspiration for the club’s focus on awarding scholarships to women returning to school.
Women seeking graduate degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno can apply for a Jack Simon Memorial Scholarship and be eligible for as much as $4,000 toward the pursuit of an advanced degree. Jack Simon, a longtime Reno businessman and the late husband of former SITM president Jeanne Baxter, was a longtime supporter of SITM and its efforts to advance the status of women and girls.
Deadline for application for a Women’s Scholarship is February 15. Applications are available at www.sitmnv.org.
SITM also is offering at least eight scholarships to graduating high school seniors continuing their education. Applicants need not be university or college bound, but pursuing some type of post secondary education and training program. Awards are for $2,000 and must be used in 2010-2011 academic year. Minimum requirements include a 2.5 GPA, post secondary education plans, and a demonstrated financial need. A complete application is available at www.sitmnv.org or by calling Ann Steckline at (775) 826-2133. Applications are due March 5.
All scholarship winners will be recognized at one of two special awards luncheons hosted by SITM at the Atlantis Hotel Casino Resort in Reno.
