Bring your family and join us on Wednesday, May 16, from 5:30 ? 7:00PM at the Incline Village Library for a Tahoe Transportation District informational open house for the upcoming East Shore Express bus to Sand Harbor and the improvements planned for the Highway 28 corridor.

What is East Shore Express?

    A Park and Ride transit pilot program to provide safe, convenient alternative access to Sand Harbor from Incline Village addressing the most severely congested area within the Nevada State Route 28 Corridor (SR 28).
    Developed in response to Incline Village community and Safety Officials? concerns about traffic congestion bicyclist and pedestrian safety, as well as overall concerns of protecting the recreational and environmental assets along SR 28, the National Scenic Byway of ?America?s Most Beautiful Drive?, shared by many local, state, and federal agencies within the Tahoe Basin.

East Shore Express Hours and Costs:

    Daily service between Incline Village and Sand Harbor from June 15th to Sept 3rd.
    Proposed Parking at the old Incline elementary school. With two overflow lots at other locations, including the new Incline elementary school.
    Service every 20 minutes from 9 am to 6 pm.
    $3 round-trip cash fare for passengers with a reduced $1.50 cash fare for children 12 and under, seniors and disabled passengers.  Fare includes free entry into Sand Harbor.
    Buses will access a bus only entrance at Sand Harbor to avoid the congestion at the entrance, and will drop passengers off at the visitor center near the main beach.

Safety Improvements to complement the East Shore Express

    NDOT installing new ?No Parking? signs to create a clearly defined 1.5 mile ?No Parking Zone? near Sand Harbor starting from Memorial Point heading south to Sand Harbor to a location 1?2 mile south of Sand Harbor?s southern boundary.
    NHP, WCSO, and NV State Parks officials are planning to increase efforts to enforce the ?No Parking Zone? and keep pedestrians out of the travel lanes.

eLearning Cafe: Open enrollment for summer school courses is being held Tuesday, May 15, from 2-6PM.  Principal Cooper will be available to answer questions and take applications for IHS summer school enrollment.   You may enroll anytime through July, but 10% discounts for early signups and 20% for current Café students are available through May 15.  These are courses for fun and for credit, for one semester or two, for students of all ages, so please pass this on to anyone interested.  Please see attached poster for details.  Highlights:

Get friends together and form a small class of your own!

These are mostly blended classes, which means students can proceed at their own pace while working or traveling through the summer, checking in with our instructors in person, by phone, or by email.  Most are accredited courses offered for high school credit to middle- or high-school students attending most schools.  You tell us when you want to be done, and we will provide you with a schedule of assignments that will allow you to finish by that date.  Students must be present for science labs, certain quizzes, and final exams.  Courses may start now and will be finished by August 15.  Because we work with several different content providers, there are a wide variety of options and exceptions to the above.

Capture the Flag Day!

The IVGID Youth Advisory Council is organizing a Capture the Flag Tournament for teens! Meet at IMS? upper field near the skate park at 2:00. We will break up into teams and play some fun games of capture the flag, tournament style! Exciting prizes will be awarded for the winning team and for different categories such as ?Team VIP? and ?most saves from jail?. Refreshments will be sold. Please wear close-toed shoes that are good for running!

Girls? Night In

Come hang with just the girls at Girls Night In! Our evening will include fun games, tips and tricks for hair and skin care by a salon professional, a cooking and nutrition class with the girls at Project MANA, and a wild after-hours scavenger hunt at the Rec Center!  This program is for middle school girls ONLY!  Come in your PJs!

Leaders in Training Education (LITE)
Ages: 12 - 16 years
Learn about leadership, asset development, responsibility and service to others while gaining valuable work experience for future jobs! LITE?s assist Recreation Leaders with summer programs and help lead activities, games, sports, crafts and field trips to various locations. For more information visit our website. Program fee is $38 or $30 w/IVGID Pass.
Interviews will be conducted between May 14 and June 20. Each LITE will work one full week (about 35 hours) during one of our nine sessions of Summer Camp Xtreme and must attend a mandatory training Wednesday, June 20 from 3:00pm-5:00pm.

Come celebrate the end of the school year! IVGID Teen Programs and LTS Leadership are working together to make this last dance a great one. We have a great DJ that will play all the latest music. Appropriate dress (shorts/skirts must be longer than fingertips unless you are wearing tights, no undergarments showing) and behavior is required to attend our dances. All Incline & Crystal Bay based middle school students are welcome to attend! You must bring your student ID to enter the dance.

Get a night away from your parents for a fun-filled trip to the Summit Mall in Galena! Bring your friends or meet some new teens in the area. We will have a few hours to explore the mall and enjoy dinner at Pace?s Pizza (included in price). We will leave from and return to the Incline Village Rec Center. Evening Adventures are for participants ages 11-17. Pre-registration is required!

The 19th annual Kids? Day Faire will be held on Saturday May 19, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Kings Beach Elementary School ? Big Gym.  Kids? Day is a free resource faire for families.  Kids? Day promotes a day of fun and excitement for children and is a great outing for the whole family.  It is also a day where parents and care givers can learn about all the excellent community resources and educational opportunities for families in the North Tahoe area.

There will be games, art projects, entertainment, lots of free gifts, and raffle prizes.  Children from local dance, music, karate, and other unique local classes will provide the entertainment.  There will also be fire engines, police cars, helicopters, and many more displays.

Junior Cotillion is a traditional program for children where valuable lessons in behavior and social conduct are taught. This program is designed to build self-esteem, confidence, and character into each student by presenting them with the fundamentals of etiquette, table manners and dance.

It's that time of year. Time to get your athletes out of that winter slumber and active again. What's the best way to start? Speed, Agility and Quickness. Well, let me introduce myself. My name is Kelvin Howell and I have hosted numerous football and speed camps in Northern Nevada. I also personal train high school athletes looking to move on to the college level. Here is a short bio about myself: Kelvin Howell is an experienced competitive athlete with a background in speed and weight training. Kelvin graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with his degree in Business Management and obtained his Masters degree in Business Administration in 2005. He was an all league performer at Seaside High School where he played running back and averaged 10 yards per carry and was All League at Monterey Peninsula College as a cornerback. Kelvin played collegiate football at the University of Nevada, Reno and Semi-pro football with the Fresno Bandits. Kelvin has been associated with many speed and strength coaches and has worked with several high school programs leading their off-season speed/weight training and conditioning programs. Kelvin has hosted several camps for speed and agility as well as contact and non-contact football camps. Principal Cooper will be available to answer questions and take applications for IHS summer school enrollment at the open house on May 3.  The high school WILL be open Monday-Thursday 9-1 during the summer, but the IHS classes will be held at the middle school. 

Do you love Lake Tahoe and have an interest in learning more about the lake? Do you enjoy science, learning new information, and sharing your knowledge?
 
Residents who would like to help people learn about the region's environmental assets and challenges are needed to serve as volunteer docents at the Thomas J. Long Foundation Education Center and the UC Davis Eriksson Education Center. Located in Incline Village and Tahoe City respectively, the two UC Davis education centers are well positioned along the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.
 
"Each year, we have thousands of children and adults touring our education centers, and we need informed, enthusiastic docents to help them get the most out of their visits," said education director Heather Segale, UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC).
 
Visitors to the centers include school groups from the greater Lake Tahoe-Truckee region as well as local residents and visitors to the basin.
 
The training courses and a copy of the UC Davis Docent Training Manual will provide new docents all the information they will need to discuss the scientific research at Lake Tahoe, local environmental issues, and natural history of the region. No prior experience is necessary, and all are welcome.
 
The first two docent training classes will be held on June 19 (2 ? 5 p.m.) and June 21 (2 ? 5 p.m.), at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, on the Sierra Nevada College campus in Incline Village, Nev. The third training will take place on June 23, starting with a boat ride aboard the UC Davis Research Vessel John LeConte and finishing at the UC Davis Tahoe City Field Station. Space aboard the boat is limited and will be available on a first-come basis. Attendance at all three training sessions is strongly recommended.
 
Presenters include UC Davis TERC director Geoff Schladow, renowned limnologist Dr. Charles Goldman, boat captain Brant Allen, geologist Tom Bullard (DRI), ecologist Christine Ngai (UNR), David Antonucci, and more. Snacks and a social happy hour will be provided.

The second Incline Schools Forum will be held on Monday 5/21/12 at 5:30pm in the IMS Forum. 

You are invited to attend the second Incline Schools Forum for the 2011-2012 school year. This question and answer session will cover local issues that relate to all Incline public schools including the tasks and progress of the Incline Great Schools Committee.

Our three school administrators and parent representatives of the Incline Great Schools Committee will be in attendance to respond to questions.

Parents and community members will be able to submit questions on a card, anonymously, if preferred. Questions will be addressed at the forum or on inclineschools.org if time does not allow. A record of the questions and answers will be posted on inclineschools.org.

If you answered YES to one or more of these questions - you should take a look at what Auburn Ski Club's Tahoe City based 'Devo Team' is offering this summer.

Voted "the most fun you could have in a summer".  The 'Devo Team' will train in Tahoe City during the summer vacation to help you improve your overall fitness, balance, coordination and ski technique.

We obviously hope you intend to ski race again next year - but even if you are thinking about trying another sport - The 'Devo Team' is the best way to stay in shape and have a ton of fun this summer.

Kara will be leading the program again with Stephan, Ben and other Club coaches.
 
What does 'The Devo Team' do?

On Tuesdays and Thursdays The Devo Team meets at 3pm at the Tahoe City cross country center for an hour and a half  workout - running, games, agility, mountain bike rides, roller skiing, strength, balance, technique practices etc.

Saturday is an adventure day - usually a fun hike and a swim in a  mountain lake or a plunge into a creek for a cool down.  Kids from Truckee join us on Saturdays too - so its a great way to make new friends who are also into having fun in the outdoors.

So TALK TO YOUR FRIENDS AND TO YOUR PARENTS & sign up if you think Devo could be fun for you this summer.

The cost is $295 for the summer plus $20 club membership.  Sessions run from June 19- Aug 25th.  
Come for as many or as few sessions as your summer allows - you will be glad you did!

Hi Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Parents,

If you have not already taken the PLAN (the practice test for the ACT), please register to take the test at one of the next two testing sessions, listed below and offered by the e-Learning Cafe in Incline Village.

This is really important preparation for juniors.  However, it is also important for freshman and sophomores.  You will want to become comfortable with the test, and the test results are often needed as you seek admission to competitive summer and enrichment programs.

The pre-ACT EXPLORE test is also available for 8th and 9th graders on the same date and times.  Both tests generate a list of specific subjects and topics you should study and know well to succeed at the ACT.  The exams are scored by ACT and returned in approximately three weeks.

Test date and times are 9AM or 1PM, Sunday, April 22.  Cost:  $50.  You can register by calling 775-831-2423.  You may pay by cash, check or credit card on or before the day of the test, or via Paypal to donate@elearningcafes.org.

Taking the test at 9 am will best simulate testing conditions, but we understand that this time may not be possible for each of you.

Free Public Performance at St. Francis Monday

On April 16th, 6:00 ? 7:00 pm, our Incline High School We the People team, led by award-winning teacher Milt Hyams, will conduct a practice-run testimony and Q & A session about the founding principles of the US Constitution.

Two units of the Nevada State championship team will present, with each unit focusing on different aspects of the Constitution. You will get to question the students, thus playing an important role as they practice answers to prepare for the national competition in Washington D. C. on April 28 & 29.

The event is open to the public and is downstairs in the St. Francis parish hall. (It is not part of a church service.)

Dear Parents and Guardians:                        

You are invited to attend a Town Hall Meeting on May 2nd at 5 p.m. in the Theater at Incline High School to discuss the findings from the survey about the 2013-2014 proposed calendar.

The Washoe County School District?s strategic plan, Envision WCSD 2015 ? Investing in Our Future, calls for important reforms to our school calendar to ensure that we are meeting the education needs of all students. Specifically, the plan pledges to provide ?high-quality instruction that is both differentiated and engaging, so that students who need additional support will receive targeted interventions that will support their academic success?[and] students who are succeeding and excelling will receive opportunities to achieve even more.?

To meet this goal:
1.    A calendar focus group was assembled and tasked to develop a district-wide calendar that maximizes student learning and achievement for all students.
2.    A focus group was convened in Incline to try to align the goals of the calendar committee to improve student achievement while meeting the unique needs of the Incline Village community.  
3.    As a result, two calendars were developed and presented to the community on February 8.
4.    A survey was conducted in March to determine what calendar was most preferred.  

The Option 2 Calendar which was preferred by 68.6% of those taking the survey will be recommended to the Board of Trustees for approval as the 2013-2014 Incline Schools Calendar.

You are invited to attend a Town Hall Meeting on May 2 at 5 p.m. in the Theater at Incline High School to discuss the findings of the survey.

Lake Tahoe School is pleased to announce the presentation of ?Finding Kind? on Tuesday, April 17th from 6:30-8:30. This event is open to the public.  Finding Kind is a documentary created by filmmakers Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson to ?bring awareness of the effects of meanness within ?girl world?.  Private screenings are being offered across the country.
Parsekian and Thompson set out on a cross-country journey of discovery and education to look at the effects of girl on girl bullying.  Finding Kind is a document of their travels and includes interviews with women and girls who have experienced bullying as well as discussions with respected experts and authors in the fields of psychology, education, and the interrelationships of women and girls.

Finding Kind provides an opportunity for students, parents and educators to open the dialogue about bullying and to ?take steps to bring awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of bullying within girl world.?

Note from the Filmmakers:
So often, we are faced with world-scale problems that seem impossible to solve. What we fail to realize is that at the root of so many of our problems is a lack of human connection and respect for others? With the constant pressures girls face to look and act a certain way, competition and jealousy have gotten in the way of functional friendships. While males have been taught to compete in sports and to view each other as comrades, females have been taught to compete with each other, and view one another as threats. This is a concept we must unlearn quickly. It's common to hear girls complain about how unfair it is that boys can maintain a group of friends throughout a lifetime, but for girls, having ONE true friend makes you lucky. These facts are evidence of the lack of connection and respect that we are talking about. We are here to change that.
For it to be considered ?normal? that girls physically and emotionally bully each other is a sad reality that we can only change as individuals. Although we have all been victims, we also share responsibility. None of us can say that we have never said or done something to wrong another female. It?s important to recognize that we ALL need to change our habits. It is also important to realize that the girls who are lashing out and bullying have a story to tell too.

DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSES AT INCLINE DURING THE SUMMER JUNE 18 - 21, MONDAY - THURSDAY, ?8 AM - 3:30 PM COST: $90 This class fulfills the 30 hours in the CLASSROOM requirement for a Nevada driver's license for those under 18. Teacher and Staff Appreciation is this week and Boosters wants to show everyone how much we appreciate them!  We have a week long parade of goodies planned out and are hoping you will be a part of it again.  The schedule is as follows:

Girls on the Run Volunteer Opportunity

Girls on the Run?Sierras is seeking volunteer Running Buddies to act as positive role models and mentors for 3rd-5th grade girls enrolled in our after school programs at Incline Elementary School and Lake Tahoe School. This is a 5 hour commitment. Running Buddies attend two 90 minute after-school program sessions plus the 2 hour end of season 5K event. We welcome both men and women to volunteer (16 years old+) and you don't need to be a runner to participate. Girls on the Run is a nonprofit prevention program for girls in the 3rd-8th grades. Our programs integrate self-esteem building and healthy living education with physical training for a 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk event. The mission of Girls on the Run is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident, using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Since running is not the focus of our program, most of the girls who participate in Girls on the Run are not serious runners.

Running Buddies dates for Incline Schools:

(Although the dates for the first RB day have passed, we are still looking for volunteers! Running Buddies who miss the first date can opt to attend a make-up session)

Lake Tahoe School: Tuesday, April 24th and Thursday, May 17th   (2:45-4:00)

Incline Elementary School: Thursday, April 19th and Monday, May 14th (3:00-4:30)

5K Event: Sunday, June 10th (9:30-11:30) **The 5K event will take place in Truckee.**

We require that all Running Buddies complete our online volunteer application and background check www.girlsontherunsierras.org/volunteer.  Since most high school students are under 18, we will be happy to help guide them through this process. ·         BUS 104: Business Exploration is a three week summer class offered by the College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno

·         The theme of the class is Entrepreneurship in the Classroom

·         Class is held every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 11th ? June 27th 2012 from 8? 11:30am

·         Class is held in the Wells Fargo Auditorium, Mathewson?IGT Knowledge Center at UNR

·         Upon successful completion of the summer class, students will earn one college credit

(This information came from an email Stacey Cooper sent to an IHS parent regarding next year's block schedule.  Stacey asked that I share the contents online so that other parents would have the information.  Kathie)

Please allow me to elaborate on the details of our schedule:

We are NOT going back to a 6 period day. We are maintaining the same schedule as we have now, but approaching it in a different manner than we did in the past. We have eliminated enrichment from the end of 3rd and 6th periods to maximize instructional time for all courses. Our blocks have returned to 100 minute blocks, and the first period has been extended to 50 minutes. We will still offer nutrition during the mid-morning for the students, and passing time is relatively the same.

We will NOT be offering enrichment as we have previously known it in the years past; specifically for the reasons of your reflection noted in your email below. The staff have adopted a structured curriculum that will maximize academic performance for all students. For example, all incoming 9th graders will be scheduled into 1st period for  ?Freshmen Success? class. This course will be designed to purposefully build confidence, study skills, organizational awareness, and college planning/high school accountability preparation. Students who have NOT passed/taken the HSPE will be funneled into courses to maximize review and skills in each subject area.

1st period WILL OFFER potential ?singleton? courses that cannot fit into the bulk of the school day. One section of Formal Geometry will be offered for limited freshmen and middle school students. Other potential courses that could fall into the 1st period offering could be an AP course or two, a singleton, or perhaps a higher level AVID, music,  or even Student leadership. At this point, until the student requests have been consolidated and prioritized, we do not know where the sections will fall into the master schedule.

There may be some students who are juniors/seniors who have passed their HSPE who may schedule into the first period for peer-tutoring, teacher assistant, or maybe even career/mentorship connection opportunities. At this point, the staff is excited to see a revitalized approach to what was formally known as ?enrichment,? and have a new perspective as to what this can become. We have a committee of staff who are working diligently to create a productive, rich curriculum that will foster success for all of our students.

Offering the ?skinny? at the end of the day is not conducive for the middle school schedule. The master scheduling committee met with the middle school staff and agreed that the beginning of the day is the most ideal opportunity for students to participate in high school course work.

In regards to early dismissal times for athletics, Mark and I are advocating with the league in regards to scheduling for next year. We have also taken note when considering the balance of the master schedule as we move forward. With us being a small school, unfortunately, we will not be able to make ALL aspects resolved, be we are going to do our best to accomplish the most.

I certainly hope this explanation clarifies any misunderstandings. I am including Kathi Goldberg in this email. She is welcome to utilize this information for our website to address all parents.

2012 INCLINE HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM  

Each year our generous community awards a number of scholarships to our seniors through our I.H.S. Scholarship Program.  This year the application deadline has come and gone.  Currently, the I.H.S. Scholarship Committee and various sponsor committees are reviewing applications in consideration of the scholarship monies available.  This evaluating process is a difficult and complicated one.  All information is sorted and assessed.  Each scholarship is unique.  The criteria can focus on one or a combination of the following: academic achievement, athletic, artistic, and vocational endeavors, community service, leadership, citizenship, extra-curricular activities, work experience.  Financial need is often, but not always, an important consideration.  Awards and scholarship selections are revealed during the Senior Awards and Scholarship Night to be held Wednesday, June 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the big gym.

This is Sharon Kennedy from Incline MS with a message about our schedule for the last few weeks of school. Beginning Tuesday, May 15 through Thursday, May 24 we will be on block schedules in order to administer the spring MAP tests. On Tuesday students will go to their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd periods with 4th, 5th, and 6th on the following day. This schedule will repeat until MAP testing has been completed. On June 11 and 12th we will also be on block schedules. Our final day of school is June 13 which will be a half day. Please contact the school if you need clarification or a copy of bell schedules for those days.

Hi, this is Sharon Kennedy with a message for the parents of all middle school students. Beginning tomorrow, Monday, May 7, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will begin taking their state mandated Criterion Reference Tests, also known as CRTs. All students will test on Monday and Tuesday, with Thursday testing for 8th grade science. Since we begin testing promptly, please ensure that your child arrives at school prior to the bell at 7:50. It is also important that your child get a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast in the morning. Participation in these tests is crucial, but if your child is ill, please keep him or her home and we will attempt to arrange a make up test prior to the close of the testing window. In order to save paper and funding, Washoe County School District has a new online registration system to register your child for school.  Registration for Incline Middle School is in progress.  It?s important that you register your child for school and update their information each year.  If you have multiple children at different schools, you will be able to register all of your children at one time.  You can access your child?s online registration by logging-in to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and following the link under ?District Messages.?

If you do not have internet access at home or need help with this process, we are opening our computer lab beginning Monday, March26 through Monday, April 30 from 2:30 p.m. to 3;30 p.m. everyday except Wednesday.  Please plan to attend, so that we can help you to register your child for the 2012-2013 school-year.

8th grade parents: Planning for the 8th grade promotion and celebration are underway.  The date of the event is Wednesday, June 13th.  Note that this date will NOT change even if the last day of school is moved due to snow days (I have had no indication that it will).  I have attached a letter that our chairman, Jeanette Martinez, sent out a week or so ago since some of you may not have seen it.
In addition, a Facebook event page has been set up for all 8th grade parents and students at http://www.facebook.com/events/340801169270859/.  Please spread the word, especially to the 8th grade families at the Lake Tahoe School since they don't get the IMS newsletter.
Another letter will be coming home soon with  more detailed information but the Facebook page will help you stay up to date.

Several fundraisers will be held.  The first one is already ready to go:
The Reno/Sparks 2012 Coupon book Fundraiser has arrived, they are $20.00.  Jeanette will place a order form and book in the office for those to look at and purchase.  If any 8th graders want an order form with a sample book Jeanette will be happy to give them one, so that they can fundraise on their own too.  This fundraiser will end by April 30,12.

Notice about a schedule alteration next week: On Monday, February 13 and Tuesday February 14 only, IMS will once again be on a block schedule in order to administer the 8th grade state writing assessment. A change to the test this year requires that students be tested on a computer for an extended period of time which necessitates this change. While only 8th grade students will be testing, all students must be on this schedule. Monday - periods 1,2,& 3 - Tuesday, - Periods 4,5,& 6. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. According to the Webster?s New World dictionary, avid is defined as ?having an intense desire or craving? or ?eager and enthusiastic?. Students at Incline Middle School will soon come to also associate this word with the acronym AVID, Achievement Via Individual Determination, through the implementation of a system that promotes college readiness.

The Incline Great Schools Committee had suggested that this program, which has been in place at Incline High School for several years, be extended to our local middle school to address the needs of many average students, second language learners, and children whose parents had never attended college. While this had been determined at the time to be a long term goal for Incline Middle School, grants pursued and attained by Washoe County School District made it possible for IMS to begin the process this year.

During the summer, the school administrator, the school counselor, and three classroom teachers had the opportunity to attend a three day AVID summer institute in San Diego along with WCSD AVID Coordinator, Trish Shaffer and staff members of Sparks Middle School, Sparks High School, and Dilworth Middle School. It was here that the initial work of developing a class whose mission is ?to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society? had its genesis.

The first class will begin in January with the start of the second semester under the tutelage of IMS AVID coordinator and teacher, James ?Scott? Vaughan. Students selected for the program will receive access to the AVID curriculum four days a week for this first year with plans to increase the class to 5 days a week for the 2012-13 school year. Students will become familiar with using Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading (WICR) to deepen their understanding of materials in core classes and empower them with the skills necessary for post-secondary areas of study.

What is exciting for everyone at Incline Middle School is that the strategies taught and reinforced by AVID are suitable for all learners and can be used across the curriculum. Cornell note taking provides a format for information, student questions and class summaries. These two column notes can be used in many classes to organize important facts and as study aids. Socratic seminars provide a formal structure for student centered dialogue that contributes to deeper understanding of ideas and information. Students learn to read with a purpose, identify key vocabulary, and recognize important concepts through marking of the text. Tutorials can teach students to become self-directed advocates for their own education by requiring students to formulate deeper level questions about the work in current core classes.

Through these, and many other approaches such as carousel brainstorming, numbered heads , philosophical chairs, binder checks, and service learning projects, teachers at IMS hope to begin to bridge the academic gap that has prevented many students from reaching for higher level educational opportunities. By beginning this program at the middle school level and collaborating with the ongoing program at Incline High School, we are one step closer to our goal of every child by name and face to graduation, college or career ready.

This May, linked to sustainability lessons from Earth Day, Incline Elementary School will be launching a new environmentally conscience lunch time challenge. For one day each week we are inviting students to lessen their eco impact by bringing a Zero Waste Lunch to school that day. These "Waste Free Wednesdays" have the potential to reduce our students environmental impact, promote more sustainable daily habits, and is a very relevant opportunity to educate our school's community on environmental issues. When planning lunch for your child(ren) for "Waste Free Wednesdays"(Starting the Second Wednesday this May: 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30), please minimize food and packaging waste by packing a waste-free lunch!

 Incline Elementary School PTA is participating in the 3rd annual Nevada Moves Day on Wednesday, April 25.
On April 25 Incline Elementary school students, parents and teachers are invited to walk or bike to school. Pleae wear IES Spirit Wear or green and gold on your walk or bike to school.   Participants can either leave directly from home or meet up with groups at one of the following locations:
1) The Chateau/Incline golf course
2) The skate park at Hwy. 28 and Southwood
3) Northwood and Hwy 28 (the old Grog and Grist/Village Ski Loft)
If you are walking with the group please be at the meeting location by 8:15 am.  Students still need to be at school in time for the 1st bell at 8:55 am.
 A light snack will be availble in the playground once the walkers arrive at school.  We need one or two people to volunteer between 8:00am and 9:15am to serve the snack to students as they arrive at school.  To volunteer please contact Pauline at 775-240-0991/tahoetrini@hotmail.com

We are looking for volunteers for PTA Board and Committee positions for next school year.   

The current PTA Board has 4 members, we believe that an ideal number for our board is 5 and we are looking for 5 people for the 2012/2013 members.  All Board and Committee positions for the 2012/2013 school year are available. There can be more than one person on any committee.  Should there be more than one person interested in a Board Position we will have a vote at the May PTA meeting.  We encourage everyone to volunteer for a position. If you held a committee position this year that you would like to continue with that position next year please confirm your interest by sending an e-mail to Pauline.

Grade 5 Outdoor Education Trip

"Many Hands Make Light Work"

The Meet the Masters Art Show is on Tuesday April 17, 2012 at 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  Reflections Art Work and photos taken during this school year will also be on display.  During the Art Show you will be able to order custom products decorated with student's art work.

Refreshments will be served.

Kidscape is a professional acting program that strengthens important skills such as self esteem, self confidence, and presentation skills through improvisational acting.
IES PTA has partnered with Kidscape to bring their program to IES.  This program has been available to Reno area students for over 6 years. 
The program is open to all IES students from Kindergarten to grade 5.  It will be held at IES on Tuesdays at 3:15 to 4:15 from April 17 to June 5.  The afterschool program will meet on the landing near the 1st grade area.

Assembly - March 23 at 2 pm
The next PTA sponsored school assembly is on Friday March 23, 2012 at 2 pm.  IES students  will be treated to a show by Steve Granta of Totally Courageous Basketball.

With his exciting display of ball handling, wizardry and fun, Steve amazes the crowd with his basketball magic. Pens, giant pencils, umbrellas, cups, feet and even people -- you name it, Steve will spin a basketball on it!

Steve uses his wonderful athletic abilities and ball handling skills to help communicate a powerful message of excellence to young people (K-8), inspiring them to be courageous and live out their dreams. Steve stresses the importance of hard work, education and making the right choices in life.

As always parents are welcome to attend this PTA funded assembly.

YEARBOOK:
Order your 2011/2012 IES yearbook now.  Yearbooks are $20.00 each.  To order please give your classroom  teacher your check made out to IES PTA.
Yearbook Wishing Stars are special messages to your child, a special teacher or friend in the yearbook.  A message of up to 60 characters is $5.00 and a message of up to 100 characters is $8.00.  The Deadline to turn in Wishing Star messages is April 7.  Please make checks payable to IES PTA and submit the check and message to your teacher or leave it in the yearbook folder in the PTA bin in the office.

During the Art Show the students will be able to show their families, friends, and the community the six featured master artists we covered this year.  We will also have Reflections projects and photos taken throughout the week on display.
To make this Art Show as enjoyable as possible, we will need some help.

From 2PM to 3PM we'll need help bringing the finished presentation boards to the Multi-Purpose Room and hanging the boards up on the folded, blue lunch tables with provided wire. We'll only be able to use and set-up.
The Art Show begins at 5:30PM, so we'll need a couple of volunteers to come in at 5PM to help organize the tables into a flowing presentation "gallery" utilizing the entire MPR .
After 7:30PM, we'll need some volunteers to help remove all the artwork from the presentation boards with provided staple removers and place them into the correct portfolios so that parents will be able to take the portfolios home.
Fundraiser portion of the show - help with set-up, ordering during the show, closing up, and beyond:
Tia will need 6 - 10 volunteers to arrive 30 minutes before the event to bring the boxes down from the Parent/MTM Room and organize the tables where parents will be able to order products. The volunteers will also be taking orders during the event and tidying up after the event. Please bring a calculator and pencils/pens.
On Wednesday evening, April 18th, Tia will need 2 - 4 volunteers to help sort through the orders to verify that $ = products ordered, orders are filled out correctly and completely, and scan all orders.
After the orders are received Tia will need 4 - 6 helpers to sort through the products and place them in boxes assigned to the different classrooms.

BIDS FOR KIDS DINNER AND AUCTION
The PTA Bids for Kids Dinner and Auction is on Saturday March 24, 2012. Tickets are on sale now, the current ticket price is $50.00 for one ticket and $90.00 for two people. Full tables may be reserved for $450.00.  Ticket prices will increase on February 16, 2012.  Please purchase your tickets in the next two weeks to take advantage of the above prices.  Tickets may be purchased at the Potlatch, from Robyn at robynhugar@me.com from Julie at Jareber@yahoo.com and if you would like to use a credit card to purchase your tickets you may do so at http://iespta.eventbrite.com 
In conjunction with the Auction grade 4 and 5 students are selling raffle tickets.  The price per ticket is $5.00 for one and 5 tickets for $20.00.  Please support our 4th and 5th graders and purchase a raffle ticket.  The money raised will help to support Outdoor Education at IES for this year and for the future.  The drawing will be held at the Auction on March 24, you do not have to be present to win.
We are still looking for a 4th grade parent to co-ordinate a class basket/project for the 4th grade. If you are a 4th grade parent please consider taking on this project, currently the 4th grade is the only group that will not be represented by a basket/project at the auction.

We will have lots of free games to play including Bingo, the latest Board Games and Wii.  Prizes will be handed out at the end of the evening!
 
Plan to have you dinner at Game Night on Friday.  Pizza, baked items and drinks will be available for sale.  Spirit Wear, Bids for Kids auction tickets and raffle tickets will also be available for sale.
 
This is going to be a fun evening!!

The meeting for the grade 5 Outdoor Education trip has been moved to Monday January 23, 2012 at 5:30pm.  There have been two other dates that were published for this event and both of those had to be cancelled for various reasons.  We appologize for the confusion, the date of this meeting will be January 23.  Parents with children in grade 5 are strongly urged to attend this meeting as people for Sierra Nevada Journey's will be there to answer your questions about the camp as will IES parent organizers.
Grade 4 parents are invited to attend this meeting as well.  We plan to continue this program beyond this year and it would be very helpful to have grade 4 parents involved in the planning and fundraising for next years trip even before the start of next school year.

2) We have decided to make grade baskets/projects for this year's auction instead of class baskets as we did last year.  Please help your grade co-ordinator to put together the best possible basket or project for your grade.  We would like to achieve really special grade baskets and projects that will be in high demand at the auction.

This year, for the 1st time in many years the 5th grade class will be going on an overnight outdoor education trip.  The PTA hopes to make this trip an annual event.

A 5th grade parent information night is scheduled for Wednesday January 18th at 5:30pm, representatives from Sierra Nevada Journey's Grizzley Ranch in Portola CA will be there to present to the parents.  All 5th grade parents are encouraged to attend.

In order to make this program a success and sustain the program for future 5th grade classes the PTA has voted to donate $5000 to this year's trip and to establish a yearly, raffle in conjunction with the Bids for Kids Auction, the proceeds of which will be used to help fund the outdoor education trip. The Raffle will be co-ordinated by each 5th grade class. Parents will be asked to pay a portion of their students fee, as they would for any other field trip.

5th grade families who have choosen the monthly payment option, please remember that your payments are due on the 15th of each month, including December 15, 2011 and January 15, 2012.

The theme for the 2012/2013 Reflections Art program is the Magic of a Moment.

Incline Elementary School students have a wonderful opportunity to put their science knowledge to work, by preparing and entering into the annual Science Fair.  All IES students from kindergarten to grade 5 are welcome to enter.  Students may enter as individuals or as teams.

The Incline Star Follies shows are scheduled for April 27th and 28th.  As in years past, IES and LTS students in 5th grade are invited to apply to be in the show.  We will be taking 6-8 male students and 8-10 female students (16 total).  Please see the attached application for rehearsal requirements.

The IES Student Council would like to announce the kick off of their Project MANA Holiday Food Drive. Even though Thanksgiving is over, there is still a need for food to help feed needy families for the upcoming holidays.

Starting Monday, food bins will be placed at the front office, student pick up and drop off and in the multipurpose room for students and families to place canned food items. 

Did you know that Project MANA serves on average more than 300 meals a day to North Lake Tahoe and Truckee Communities?   Please help the students of IES help others this holiday season. Thank you for your generous support of Project MANA, as a 501 (c)(3) organization your contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

High Altitude Fitness:
IES 5th Grade will be going on a 4 night/5day outdoor science and leadership camp in April, 2012. We're fundraising to help with the costs.
For every purchase between 11/30 and 12/16/11 you will receive a raffle ticket to enter to win either a 1 month High Altitude membership or a 1 month kids climbing club class and help support the 5th grade trip by enjoying a great cup of coffee, tea, latte, mocha or cappucino at High Altitude Fitness Coffee Lounge.  You don't need to  be a member at High Altitude to go in and enjoy a cup of coffee. This opportunity to raise money for the 5th grade trip will run from November 30 to December 16, 2011
