Each year Project MANA serves Thanksgiving baskets of food to anyone who is unable to have a meal on his or her own.
For the past couple of years, the organization has seen an increase in the number of local families needing help.
This year, MANA’s “Let’s Talk Turkey” distribution provided to more than 605 families — its largest distribution ever— and more than 30 per cent higher than last year’s distribution, thanks to generous support of the communities of Incline Village, Kings Beach, Tahoe City and Truckee.
“I went out and bought about 40 more turkeys so that we could provide for everyone on the waiting list,” said George LeBard, executive director of Project MANA.
Around the Tahoe community, MANA received support. At Incline Middle School, the seventh grade Leadership Council held a food drive on Wednesday, Nov. 18, with students collecting more than 1,300 nonperishable items and 1,100 pounds of food.
Girl Scout Troop 630 had a very unique way of helping Project MANA this year. First, the girls went to Apple Hill and picked apples. Then, they baked them into 14 pies.
They also helped sort through all the food that was collected at Project MANA. Helping with the pie baking project were Taylor Cheney, Laurel Taylor, Alyssa and Erica Kennedy, Delilah Fleming, Anna Cole, Michaela Cathy, Jessica George, Ciera Winberg, Britney Speckert and Karyss Thompson.
Once again, families in Truckee and Tahoe can sit down and share Thanksgiving blessings with each other because of Project MANA’s efforts.
