Would you like to make a donation — not a monetary donation — but a donation of an unbelievable gift that will help someone improve his or her life? Incline Middle School is looking for volunteers to donate a little time to help students with reading.
Currently volunteers from the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline and Sierra Nevada College are working with students at IMS to provide a one-on-one reading time during lunch time at the school. These volunteers are making an enormous difference not only in the literacy development of the students at IMS but also in their lives, according to IMS Librarian Liz Harrell.
Now Harrell wants to expand the program into the summer months. Students tend to fall behind with reading skills in the summer and then end up trying to catch up when school starts again in the fall.
To change this yearly problem, Harrell is looking for a small army of local volunteers. The more people that volunteer to help in the summer the more students that will be able to retain reading skills over the summer and be ready again in the fall. Can you give up 30 minutes or more a week to help?
I know from first-hand experience that this is a rewarding experience. It is not only a great opportunity to become acquainted with great students, it is very rewarding to see how much the reading improves with each time.
Give Liz Harrell a call at (775) 832-4220 and sign up — satisfaction guaranteed for this program.
