Dear parents of motivated high-schoolers,
We have been very pleased with the growing list of online courses offered by Truckee Meadows Community College and also Western Nevada College in Carson City, both of which are increasingly encouraging about enrolling high-schoolers in its dual credit programs. Pursuing these types of classes helps distinguish Nevada high schoolers applying to college from the rest of Nevada students, and there are many that students can do from home without ever having to set foot on campus. I have attached some basic instructions on how parents can enroll students in college courses this summer and fall, and receive dual high school credit at the same time, for those of you who may not be familiar with this great opportunity.
There are a few caveats. One, these college courses will certainly transfer within the higher ed system in Nevada, but may not transfer outside of Nevada for college credit. Two, your student needs to be at least 15 with a GPA of 3.0 in most cases, so be prepared to show a high school transcript to document your student's GPA. Three, be sure to check www.ratemyprofessors.com before signing up your student. A great professor can bring to life the most uninteresting of subjects, and vice versa. This information is all given in greater detail in the attached.
You are not limited to UNR, TMCC and WNC, by the way. I have also listed options for enrolling in community college courses for students looking at the UC system or University of Washington, for example.
Enrollment for WNC starts April 5. Enrollment for TMCC starts April 6. Enrollment for WNC for fall semester starts April 10.
You need an NSHE number to enroll in any course and getting that number will take a few days to process, so get started on that right away per the attached instructions before the popular instructors fill up their sections.
Please feel free to forward to other parents who might be interested.
Regards to all, Kathryn Kelly
