IB Parents Meeting 2-Dec
IB Parents Meeting - 2-Dec, 5:30pm, IHS Theater
Prospective Parents of International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidates: artículo en español
As many of you may know, Incline High School is in the process of becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. We are currently a Diploma Programme (DP) Candidate School, with a projected authorization date of the fall of 2011. What this means is: If your son or daughter is currently a ninth grader or younger, he or she will have the opportunity to earn this highly-regarded diploma.
The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit, non-governmental educational foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, offers the IB Diploma for students in the final two years of secondary school. Established in 1965, the program evolved from its original purpose as a service to geographically mobile students in the international community to embracing schools in national systems across the globe. IB is currently in 138 countries worldwide.
IB students relate first to their own national identity – their own language, literature, history, and cultural heritage, and then strive to understand the corresponding traditions of others. The philosophy of IB is as follows: “Through comprehensive and balanced curricula coupled with challenging assessments, the International Baccalaureate Organization aims to assist schools in their endeavors to develop the individual talents of young people and teach them to relate the experience of the classroom to the realities of the world outside. Beyond intellectual rigor and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship, to the end that IB students may become critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world affairs, conscious of the shared humanity that binds all people together while respecting the variety of cultures and attitudes that make for the richness of life.”
To earn the IB Diploma, juniors and seniors must take a broad selection of courses, including a second language. Additionally, they are required to participate in 150 Creativity-Action-Service hours, take the Theory of Knowledge class, and complete a 4000 word extended essay on an academic subject of their choice. Advance Placement tests will continue to be offered and can be taken alongside IB examinations. IB Diploma Candidates should be those who are highly-motivated and currently have an A/B average in school.
If you believe your son or daughter fits the description of an IB Diploma Candidate, we invite you to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday December 2nd at 5:30 in the Incline High School theatre. We realize that many of you are eager to learn more and apologize that this meeting will not take place sooner. By this date, our IB administrators and coordinator will have been trained, as well as planned visits to other IB schools completed. We will be able to provide you with the most concise and knowledgeable information at that time.
Please feel free to contact Jeni Cross (jcross@washoe.k12.nv.us ), IB Coordinator Designate at IHS, should you have any questions that arise before the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
John Clark

Screening of The Story of Stuff & Trashion Art Show
The holiday season is upon us, which means it’s time to go shopping. Shopping for gifts, decorations, new clothes, new electronics…for stuff. This will do some damage to Americans’ bank accounts, but what is the real cost to people, the environment, the economy, to the world as a whole? From extraction to production to consumption to disposal, when one takes a closer look at consumerism, there are considerable hidden costs.
In the Story of Stuff, author and activist Annie Leonard candidly examines stuff: where it comes from, where it goes, and how it affects people and the earth along the way. Leonard’s 20 minute film is simple, straightforward, and hopeful. Our current consumerist model is fatally flawed, but there is another way.
The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and Sierra Nevada College are pleased to host a screening of The Story of Stuff. Madonna Dunbar, Resource Conservationist with the Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID) will be on hand to field any questions on how to cut down on trash and how to recycle. The Truckee High School Envirolution Club and Sierra Nevada College art students will be showcasing Trashion creations and art made with postconsumer materials. There will also be demos on how to make fun things like wrapping paper or bows out of what otherwise would have been trash.
Date: Saturday, December 5th, 2009
Time: 4-5:30pm. Art reception to be followed by film screening
Cost: Free. No-host bar.
Location: Assembly Rooms 139 & 141, Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, Nevada (on the campus of Sierra Nevada College)

WCSD Snow Day Procedures
Incline Village schools determine their own delayed starts or closures. Announcements are sent to all local radio and television stations by 6 a.m.
The Incline Schools Snow HOTLINE is 337-7509. Please call this number to confirm if Incline Schools will be closed or on a time delay start.
DELAYED START
In response to the area receiving heavy amounts of snow, a "Delayed Start For School" will be used when it appears an extra hour or two of time will allow road crews to clear roads and highways.
A "Delayed Start" will be announced on local radio and TV stations beginning at 6 a.m. and will be featured at the top of the WCSD website's main page.
The public will be advised that schools will open and classes will begin later than usual. All students who ride a school bus will be picked up later than usual at their regular stop, dependent on the delay (if it is a one hour delay, students will be picked up one hour later than their usually scheduled pick-up).
Morning kindergarten starts an hour later like the other grades. If the delay is two hours, morning kindergarten will be canceled.
SNOW CLOSURE
In the event that heavy amounts of snow force the closure of school, an announcement will be made by the Washoe County School District and broadcast on local radio and TV stations. Please listen and watch for "Snow Closure" information beginning at 6 a.m. You can also log on to the WCSD website's (www.washoe.k12.nv.us ) main page.

The barrels are out and it is time to fill them for the annual Toys for Tots collection in our community.

Place new unwrapped toys in any of the barrels at the convenient locations all around the village until Dec. 15.
Barrels are located at: All Coldwell Banker locations, Incline Village Recreation Center, Village Market, Incline Elementary School, Raley's, Ace Hardware, Bar Bar Bar Pizza, Village Square Family, Pet Network, Sierra Nevada College, Curves, Dress the Part(y), Postal Express, Pak Mail, Potlatch, Nevada Security Bank, US Bank and Village Toys.
If you have any questions, Delehanty can be reached at cheryld@cbivr.com or by calling (775) 833-6444.
And don't forget to attend the 30th Annual Kick off Party for Toys for Tots at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at The Chateau in Incline Village. The festive party includes music, dancing, treats and raffle prizes and is always a fun evening for adults to socialize. To attend you need to bring one new unwrapped toy for admission. The annual tree lighting at The Chateau is held before the kick off party.
Let's get out and see how many times the local elves will need to empty the barrels in order to keep up with all the toys!
