*The (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), or FAFSA, is the first step in the financial aid process. Use it to apply for federal student financial aid, such as the Pell Grant, student loans, and college work-study. In addition, most states and schools use FAFSA information to award their financial aid. For complete information: www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Many cadets contributed to success of veterans' parade
School Zone is a weekly column written by the Washoe County School District trustees and administration about key issues and noteworthy news for parents, teachers and students.
Thousands of people who attended the Nov. 11 Veterans Day Parade in downtown Reno witnessed many instances of community pride.
More than 70 entrants took part in the parade, including veteran, civic and community groups. The city of Reno handed out 6,000 American and Prisoner-of-War flags, and from my perch in the back of a Nevada National Guard-donated Humvee, the waving flags added pomp and dignity.
The bulk of the parade participants were the 2,000 JROTC cadets from 11 local high schools who sang cadence, held flags and banners, and marched down the parade's mile-long route. This olive-green sea of uniform-wearing youngsters added a youthful pride to the patriotic occasion.
Many people I talked to after the parade commented that 2009 was "the best attended, best organized parade" they had ever seen.
People should feel pride knowing that the Veterans Day Parade was a strong demonstration of planning and cooperation between the city of Reno, Washoe County School District and Nevada National Guard.
For instance, the Reno City Council allocated additional funds to the parade and was able to help defray the cost of the school buses necessary to transport marching bands to the parade site. The city council's generosity ensured that marching bands from Reno, Damonte, North Valleys, Spanish Springs, Sparks, Wooster and Reed high schools could participate.
The Nevada National Guard helped make the parade a success by donating the Humvees that led the participants, a Chinook helicopter that flew directly over the route to the waving and applause of many, and most importantly of all, hundreds of highly motivated officers and sergeants who mentored, coached and inspired the 2,000 JROTC cadets to perform at such a high level.
"The school district has been great in participating in the Veterans Day Parade," explained Peggy Nelson-Aguilar, from the Reno Parks, Recreation and Community Services department. "This year's parade was dedicated to the memory of Col. Alex Woods, (former the school district's JROTC commander) who was instrumental in getting the high school JROTC units to participate at the high level that they now do."
The combination of the city of Reno and Washoe County School District cooperation, the dedicated service of the Nevada National Guard, and the attendance of so many patriotic veterans and civic groups, ensures the Veterans Day Parade will continue to be a source of pride for the community and a fun and exciting event for the thousands of people who attend each year.

3A boys soccer championship: Incline wins crown in second overtime
The Incline and Sparks boys soccer teams needed two sudden-death overtime periods to decide the 3A state champion.
In the 9th minute of the second overtime, Michael Ceragioli kicked a free kick in front of Sparks' goal that was headed in by Edward Rodriguez to lift the Highlanders to a 1-0 win over the Railroaders and to a state title.
"It was a tremendous performance by both teams," Incline coach Tom Canino said. "Both teams had great opportunities."
During regulation, Sparks and Incline traded scoring chances that either went wide of the goal or were stopped by Railroaders goalkeeper Javier Torres or Highlander goalkeeper Carlos Garcia.
Sparks got a good scoring chance in the first overtime, but Garcia made a save to push the game into a second overtime where Rodriguez capitalized.
"Me and Johnny (Luna) will just go for that," Rodriguez said of his game-winning goal. "We always talk to each other (and say) if you miss it, I'll just go for it. He missed it and I was there."
Sparks coach Frank Avila said he was proud of his team's effort. "We played them the hardest anybody's played them all year," he said. "I tell them (players) to keep their heads up and all honor to them."
Senior Grad Nite info
Dear Parents,
As you probably know by now, the senior class has chosen Disneyland as their destination for the after graduation Safe and Sober Night. The graduates will leave promptly after their ceremony to catch a plane to head to Los Angeles and Disneyland. Disneyland is open to graduates from 11:30pm - 6:30am, with rides, attractions, fireworks, dance parties, etc. all night long. Last year's graduating class went to the Disneyland Grad Nite and had an amazing time.
The cost for each senior for their Safe and Sober Grad Nite will be $300. This fee includes all transportation, including buses to/from IHS, airfare to/from Los Angeles, buses to/from Disneyland, admission into the park and breakfast.
We have instituted a payment plan, with a non-refundable deposit of $75 to hold the student's place for Disneyland, due on December 5. You may choose to pay the full $300 up front, or, for convenience there are payments (in addition to the deposit) of $75/each - due 1/5/10, 2/5/10 and 3/5/10. A payment-coupon book will be mailed to your home and should arrive early next week. You may return your payment in the envelope(s) that was provided via mail or drop the envelope, with payment, off at the Incline High School main office. Checks should be payable to IHS Boosters, Safe and Sober Night and in the memo section, please put your student's name.
Currently, due to constraints by the airlines, we are able to only book 43 student seats and thus, we are having to accept first come first serve based on the deposits we receive. We are hoping that another flight will open up to accommodate more students, but the airlines have not confirmed that this will be possible (at this time). When we find out what the airlines schedules will be for June, we will be able to better inform you.
Information for Disneyland Grad Nite is available at: http://disneylandyouthprograms. In addition, inclineschools.org will have an area that will give you information on the Senior Safe and Sober Grad Nite as it becomes available to us.
In the meantime, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of us:

Thanks for all the support
We would like to acknowledge the many people who have played an important role in our daughter Katelyn's national, high school and Junior Golf career over the past several years. Special thanks to Kevin MacMillan, editor/sports writer, and the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza for its interest and coverage it gives to IHS student-athletes.
Thank you to IHS head coach Joe Humasti, assistant coach Chuck Jenson and Athletic Director Dan Schreiber for their hours and dedication working with our kids. Thank you to Principal John Clark, teachers and countless others who have supported all of the athletes. There are important teammates, but Shelby Hooper, in particular, helped make many on this team better players and better people.
We are also extremely fortunate, to have very influential and generous people in our community who raise important dollars to aid Junior Golf, at all levels. Special thanks from our family to Janish Clark, Gary Pulver, Lonny Parsons and all involved with Incline Junior Golf/Sportsmen of Lake Tahoe. Your help is greatly appreciated.
There is no one more important to the development of our junior players than the Incline golf courses staff. Bill Horn, Cathy Jo Johnson, Brannigan McNulty, Angie Rodriguez, Jeff Clothier, John, Mike, Neil, Becca and the entire golf operations staff have our sincerest gratitude for all that you have done to support Katelyn, Jordan and all other junior golfers' endeavors. They have gone over and beyond to help all of these kids.
Many times the people most closely associated with creating the atmosphere necessary to achieve success go unnoticed. We just feel very blessed to have everyone's support and help with what it takes to become a good player. The accomplishments and accolades that Katie and this team have achieved are truly community awards. Thank you everyone.
Ron, Shelly, Katelyn and Jordan Wright
Incline Village
WCSD Snow Day Procedures
Incline Village schools determine their own delayed starts or closures. Announcements are sent to all local radio and television stations by 6 a.m.
The Incline Schools Snow HOTLINE is 337-7509. Please call this number to confirm if Incline Schools will be closed or on a time delay start.
DELAYED START
In response to the area receiving heavy amounts of snow, a "Delayed Start For School" will be used when it appears an extra hour or two of time will allow road crews to clear roads and highways.
A "Delayed Start" will be announced on local radio and TV stations beginning at 6 a.m. and will be featured at the top of the WCSD website's main page.
The public will be advised that schools will open and classes will begin later than usual. All students who ride a school bus will be picked up later than usual at their regular stop, dependent on the delay (if it is a one hour delay, students will be picked up one hour later than their usually scheduled pick-up).
Morning kindergarten starts an hour later like the other grades. If the delay is two hours, morning kindergarten will be canceled.
SNOW CLOSURE
In the event that heavy amounts of snow force the closure of school, an announcement will be made by the Washoe County School District and broadcast on local radio and TV stations. Please listen and watch for "Snow Closure" information beginning at 6 a.m. You can also log on to the WCSD website's (www.washoe.k12.nv.us) main page.
