Tuesday, 8/18, 4:00 pm: Meet at High School, the plan (if I can get enough qualified volunteer drivers) will be to car pool up to a 'new' trail, the OGT (hint, this stands for something and will be on a trivia test). Trail head is between the First Lookout and Sheeps Flat (Tahoe Meadows) on Mt. Rose Hwy. This will be a 75-90 minute run well worth the view.
Wednesday, 8/19, 7:00 am: Meet in front of the High School at 7:00 am SHARP. We will car pool to the Tahoe Meadows for an easy 3 mile run, then on to Project Discovery (Sky Tavern on Mt. Rose) from 9:00 am till 5:00 pm for a day full of physical challenges and Team Building exercises.
At the conclusion we will go on an easy 4-6 mile run from Project Discovery and then have a Team BBQ at the site. I know this will be a long day, but it will be a day that will set us up for a Great Season.
I will get out additional info on this date shortly, but please plan on being there. As soon as you know that you can commit, shoot me an email as they need to know how many will be coming.
Beginning August 24 (First Day of School): We will have practice every day after school from 2:20-4:30 pm. Meet in front of the Track/Football field entrance.

Officials: Most Washoe school construction projects are on time, under budget
The vast majority of more than 100 summer rehabilitation projects at Washoe County public schools are under budget and on time, officials said.
The 121 projects, conducted at 52 schools (for complete list), were expected to cost $39.8 million, money secured from rollover bond sales approved by voters in 2002. The construction is expected to have education and safety benefits, said Elizabeth Wright, director of accountability, finance and public relations.
“Student achievement is critical,” Wright said. “We have got to keep these buildings in the best condition we can to keep that student achievement that is so important.”
She pointed to Cannan Elementary School, which last summer underwent millions of dollars of rehabilitation and then made the “adequate yearly progress” category under the No Child Left Behind Act for the first time in four years.
The projects range from simple repairs such as flooring and replacing gym bleachers to complete rehabilitations that district spokesman Steve Mulvenon has called “extreme makeovers.” Construction employees initiated the work hours after school concluded in the spring.
Although the district has construction projects every year, this summer’s amount was “way more than usual,” Mulvenon said. Last summer, the district spent $14 million on repairs.
Workers have run into some surprises during the construction but kept on schedule, Wright said.
“If you tear into a wall at an old house, sometime you find, ‘Oh, the wiring isn’t good. We better replace that while we’re here,’” she said. “We have to adjust.
“In spite of the challengers and surprises of working at older schools, we’re going make it for the first day of school.”
Many of the projects will not be noticed by students, but others will significantly impact the learning environment, Wright and other officials said. Better lighting, temperature control and ventilation has been shown to increase student attention and learning.
“We’re really excited see when it’s done,” Wright said.

Sierra Star Search Auditions
Can you belt out a song like Susan Boyle on American Idol? Or do you just like to sing and perform for friends and would love to be on stage? Either way you have a special opportunity to showcase your talent and win some money.
The Sierra Star Search will hold auditions from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, and Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Incline High School. Sierra Star Search holds auditions each year for its annual fundraiser Kids & Horses. Contestants are selected from the auditions to appear on stage at the Crystal Bay Casino Saturday, Sept. 12, for the annual fundraiser.
Last year, 10 contestants were selected to perform. Past contestants have ranged in age from 11 to 19.
During the fundraiser the contestants are narrowed down to three, and the first place winner is picked by audience applause in an American Idol-type format. Contestants are judged on stage presence, diction, appearance and interpretation. Prizes are awarded to the top three selected. First place receives $1,000; second place, $500, and third place, $250. To schedule an audition, call Judie Brimm at (775) 852-1600.
Not only is this an opportunity for you to appear on stage but you can help handicapped children as well. The Kids & Horses program helps handicapped children learn horsemanship as a means of therapy that improves strength, balance, coordination and self-esteem.
I can't wait to see this year's local talent on stage!

Meet the new boss
Washoe County’s new school superintendent Heath Morrison is young, experienced and excited, but can he turn around the district?
Washoe County School District Superintendent Paul Dugan retired on July 31, and the new superintendent, Heath Morrison, began his job on Aug. 1. He’s 43, married to Jennifer, and has two children, Samantha, 11, and Zachary, 9. Before coming to Nevada, he was community superintendent for the Down County Consortium in Montgomery County Public Schools, Md., where he supervised 34 schools and some 23,500 students. He holds a doctorate in Educational Policy and Planning and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Maryland.
So tell me a bit about yourself.
Let’s talk about my family first because I’m much happier talking about them than I am talking about myself. I’m married to my high school sweetheart. Her name is Jennifer, and she is an English teacher, a staff development teacher, a nationally board-certified teacher, a very, very talented lady, and as I’ve often said, I married up. We have two kids, my daughter Samantha is 11, and she’ll be in seventh grade next year. My son Zachary is 9, and he’ll be in fourth grade next year. They’re just an amazing group of people, and I’m fortunate to have a family like I have.

Former superintendent Paul Dugan started the practice, known as “brown bag luncheons,” by visiting Incline quarterly to talk with residents. Morrison's communications staff said the recently hired superintendent — who officially replaced Dugan on Saturday — would like to eventually meet with residents monthly in Incline.
Morrison's first official visit to Incline Village will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center. The event is free and open to the public.
