Wrestling: Incline's Guerra going to Turkey to coach
Tony Guerra's passion for wrestling is taking him to the highest level of the sport.
Guerra, 38, of Incline Village, was named as a coach for the USA World Greco Roman Championships in August in Ankara, Turkey.
He will attend a week-long training camp at the Olympic Training Center in July. He plans to absorb as much knowledge as he can at the camp and the World Championships and bring that back to Northern Nevada and California to pass on to young wrestlers.
"We will be mentored by the staff at the highest level of coaching. We have a mandate to take that knowledge and bring it back to the grass-roots level," Guerra said. "We have a responsibility to learn what we can to help the sport grow."
In a news release, Sam Barber, USA Wrestlings' national coaches education program manager, reiterated that stance.
"The national team coaching apprentice program provides a tremendous opportunity for USA Wrestling coaches seeking to gain invaluable experience coaching our nation's elite athletes at World and Continental Championship competitions. This provides a very unique means to grow professionally as a wrestling coach. This opportunity affords coaches the chance to learn from the best and brightest wrestling coaches in the United States and illustrates what is required to coach and prepare athletes for competition at the highest levels of our sport," Barber said.
Guerra spent 15 years as a wrestling coach at Incline High. His wrestlers there earned 52 state top three finishes and 13 state championships.
The Incline Middle School wrestling team, which Guerra started in the early 1990s, lost one match in 10 years.
Guerra has been a private coach for three-time state champion Jordan Cronin for six years. Cronin, who will be a senior in the fall at Incline, aspires to be on the 2012 United States Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team and Guerra plans to help him achieve that goal.
"I'll do everything I can to help him get there," Guerra said.
Cronin's grandmother, Linda, wrote in an e-mail that Guerra has, "an extensive résumé that encompasses all that is good about dedication to a sport, the community and the youth of the community he lives in."
It is too soon for colleges to recruit Jordan, but he already has an impressive line of schools interested in him, including Northern Michigan, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton and the U.S. Naval Academy.
"Tony has helped me realize every dream and has put me in a position to attend college on a wrestling scholarship and look ahead to competing in the Olympics," he said.
Linda said Guerra has made a marked impact on Jordan.
"Jordan's ability to grow, compete and win as an athlete is attributed to Tony's wealth of information, instruction and knowledge, on and off the mat," she said.
Guerra's wife Karina is also a wrestling coach (an engineer by trade) and his 4-year-old son, Jai Xander, is named after three-time Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling champion Alexander Karelin.
Guerra said that doesn't mean he has mapped out his son's future.
"I'm just glad he's healthy," Guerra said with a laugh.
Guerra wrestled in high school at Vacaville, Calif., where he was a three-time state medalist in the 1980s.
Guerra is trying to raise money to help pay for the trip to Turkey. Airfare and additional expenses associated are not covered by USA Wrestling. For information see the Web site at www.tonyguerra.info/turkey.html.
