Incline golfers struggle at Whittell Invitational

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — At the 15-team Whittell Invitational on Thursday in Stateline, Nev., the Incline High School boys golf team earned a sixth-place finish and was outdueled by its 2A rival, Whittell High School, who finished one spot ahead.

“We’ve had four matches with Whittell: they’ve won two, and we’ve won two,” Incline coach Joe Humasti said. “But they’re playing great golf right now, very consistent, with five guys right in the mid-to-low 80s.”

The invitational, played at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, brought together an array of teams across all athletic divisions. Manogue High School won the tournament with a five-man total of 400, followed by Truckee High School’s 410.

Incline’s 445 team total was highlighted by freshman Jordan Wright’s low score of 79, tied for the fifth-best individual performance of the day.

“Jordan’s a great competitor, and I was really pleased with his performance today,” Humasti said.

Along with senior Justin Holets’ 80, the top two Highlanders outpaced Whittell’s top two, but Incline’s three, four and five scorers struggled to stick with Whittell’s. Eirk Baumann (91), Sam Canino (96), Travis Causey (99) and Kevin Flanders (130) rounded out Incline's day.

“What I said back in March — that it’s the three, four and five guys who win state tournaments — you’re seeing that now,” Humasti said. “If we want to beat Whittell at the end of the year, we can’t have guys scoring in the high 90s.”

Humasti said that his team will continue to focus on the short game in practice, fine-tuning their skills in preparation for the zone tournament May 13. Its next match, however, is Thursday at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

Task Force looking for members

The Incline Schools Reflective Task Force will be making a report to Supt. Dugan at the next meeting on May 14th.  One of the recommendations made will be to pursue the gathering of information and determining the feasibility of bringing the International Baccalaureate (IB) program to Incline public schools.

An IB Focus group will likely be set up at that point to look at funding options, including school district and community support, as well as timing of implementation.  Site visits to existing IB schools may also be a part of this committee.  We are still in the learning stages of a very comprehensive program.

Please contact Gary Lee, gleetahoe@aol.com

if you are interested in joining this focus group.

Recycling for Wrestlers

Recyclables will be picked up every Wednesday. Please be sure we have your location by sending an email to:

Jeremy9107@aol.com

Your recyclables will be redeemed to help fund local wrestling programs (including IMS Wrestling).

Here's what it is:
The Incline Wrestling teams are asking you to help in our effort to raise money for our programs.  We are starting a community recycling program in which people can donate their recyclable items to us.  Redemption funds will then go to the schools to help fund our wrestling programs.

Here's why :
Our athletic programs are costing more and more to operate, and less and less of it is being covered by the school district meaning individual programs are having to come up with the funds to cover expenses ranging from bus costs, driver costs, tournament entry fees, cost of officials, overnight accommodations, equipment and apparel.  These expenses generally are thousands of dollars per year.

Here's how it works :
Email me your address that we can pick up your recyclables.  Nate Brimm will be by once a week on Wednesdays to pick them up.  Just have them bagged in an easy to see location (maybe by the front door).  Don't worry about having them sorted and separated.

Once a month I will take a couple of wrestler volunteers to sort and bag what we have collected.  I will then bring them to a recycling center for redemption.

Here's what is recyclable :

  • All plastics; including drink bottles, milk jugs, food containers, etc.
  • All glass; including drink containers, food containers, etc.
  • All aluminum, tin and other metal containers.
  • Electronic waste (computers, speakers, cd players, etc)
  • Batteries (car, boat, etc)
  • Scrap metal of any kind
  • no paper products

Please get involved:  This is a simple and convenient method for us to raise some money for our programs.  If all the parents and wrestlers contribute, I think it can help us avoid having to "pay to play".  I encourage you to set up a collection box for recyclables at your place of employment.  Get your neighbors, family and friends involved.  We are looking forward to a group effort.

Thank you for participating.
